Extraordinary Times

By Wade Martin & Justin Sibley

Dear Team,
As you know, our businesses, our towns, and our world are facing a sudden and extraordinary crisis with the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The virus has spread to at least 177 countries, including our local communities, where we’ve closed our mountains, either temporarily or for the season, including all resort owned and operated lodging properties and Woodward Copper, Woodward Tahoe and Woodward Park City.

PARK CITY, Utah., March 21, 2020 As a result of the continuing challenges and unfolding events surrounding the dynamic and unprecedented COVID-19 public health crisis, POWDR’s mountain resorts, including Snowbird, Copper Mountain, Mt. Bachelor, Killington and Boreal have announced they have indefinitely extended their earlier March 15-22, 2020 suspension of resort operations and will continue to assess the situation with the hope of resuming operations dependent on the situation with COVID-19. This includes Woodward Copper and Woodward Tahoe at Boreal.

PARK CITY, Utah., March 14, 2020 – At POWDR, our top priority—the health and safety of our staff, guests and local community—remains at the forefront, and for this reason, POWDR is suspending all resort operations starting tomorrow, March 15, 2020 through March 22, 2020. During this timeframe we will continue to monitor the dynamic COVID-19 situation and reassess our approach for the rest of the season.

Killington Makes $100,000 Matching Donation to Pico Ski Education Foundation to Benefit Junior Ski Racing

As part of Killington’s Play Forever commitment to protect the environment and enable participation, the resort gave a matching donation of $100,000 to Pico Ski Education Foundation (PSEF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to maintaining an affordable organized ski racing program for local families and athletes. The donation enables participation, in that funds will help provide access to ski racing for local youth and support operations of the race program.

Stock up on Woodward Gear with an Employee Discount

Woodward stands for a lot of things—progression, inclusivity, fun—and now we can add “cool gear” to the list, and better yet, “cool gear at an employee discount.” Woodward retail launched its winter collection of logo gear for men, women, and youth, and is extending an employee discount on all purchases. From t-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, and leotards, Woodward gear will bring out your inner athlete.

SilverStar’s Sausage Sizzle Raises More Than $38,000 for Australia

On January 8, SilverStar employees went above and beyond to raise money to aid those suffering from the Australia bushfires. Many employees of the Canadian resort call Australia home, including ski patrollers Rhianon Hutcheson and Darren Cook.

Rhianon says hearts were breaking for what was going on back home, so the employees decided to do something positive to help raise money to aid in disaster relief. The solution? The Sausage Sizzle fundraiser at SilverStar.

Mammut to Outfit POWDR’s Mountain Resorts

In January, POWDR announced a new partnership with premium outdoors brand Mammut to be the official uniform and apparel provider for more than 8,000 employees at 10 of POWDR's mountain resorts. With specific men’s and women’s cuts, staff at Boreal, Copper, Eldora, Killington, Lee Canyon, Mt. Bachelor, Pico Mountain, SilverStar BC, Snowbird, Soda Springs, and POWDR's Utah-based heli ski operation, Powderbird, will be outfitted in Mammut starting with the 2020-21 season.

For this issue, the Fulcrum sat down with Snowbird President and GM Dave Fields and Woodward Park City GM Shaydar Edelmann, who offered two different perspectives—one new, one seasoned—about doing business in Utah.

First, tell us a little about you.
